Brooklyn Teen Claims Responsibility for 2nd Twitter Worm

twitter_fail_whale

A second twitter worm began circulating Twitter on Sunday, with responsibility being claimed by a teenager.

Michael “Mikeyy” Mooney, has taken credit for the creation of a second variation of a worm that hit micro-blogging service Twitter, less than a full day after the first StalkDaily worm infected multiple Twitter accounts. Luckily Twitter managed to plug the security holes that were being exploited by both variants of the StalkDaily worm fairly rapidly.

Michale Mooney, a 17-year-old from Brooklyn, claimed responsibility after an interview with CNET. He says he created the worm out of boredom.

“I thought about it later and basically did it because I was bored”

Luckily Twitter stated that no personal information had been revealed as a result of the worm, which fits directly in with “Mikeyy”‘s persona, who claimed that his worms aren’t harmful in nature. This is his latest creation stemming from around 3 years experience coding various worms to exploit security flaws. It might also be his last worm, according to the interview:

“I’m done with Twitter. I’ve been getting too much attention lately.”

Michale Mooney hopes to become a security analyst one day – which I think would fit the bill perfectly.

The first varient of the StalkDaily worm took control of user’s accounts and posted tweets promotion the website Stalkdaily.com. Once the user visited the website, their account became infected and started promoting Stalkdaily.com

“I didn’t think it would spread as far or as fast as it did.”

The second variant, referred to as the “Mikeyy” worm by some, acted in the same way, except it posted tweets asking Twitter to fix the security hole and stating how “Mikeyy” was claiming responsibility for the worm.

He hasn’t been contacted by Twitter authorities yet.

Twitter Hit by StalkDaily Worm, Recovers

twitter_status

A worm appears to have infected Twitter on Saturday.

Twitter employees have been urging users not to visit StalkDaily.com, or to link to the website in any form to prevent further accounts becoming infected. DO NOT visit the website if you don’t want your Twitter account hi-jacked. It also appears that simply by viewing an infected user’s account could cause your own to become infected as well, thanks to the worm modifying your “About Me” section.

Infected users are currently busy spamming links to Stalkdaily.com all over the place – so be wary.

That was the story, at least before Twitter plugged the hole and fixed the problem a few hours after the attack.

Earlier today we were informed of a malicious site that was spreading links to StalkDaily.com on Twitter without user consent via a cross-site scripting vulnerability. We’ve taken steps to remove the offending updates, and to close the holes that allowed this “worm” to spread.

No passwords, phone numbers, or other sensitive information were compromised as part of this attack.

The Twitter Spam account also states that if you’re unable to log-in to your account, simply do a password reset.

UPDATE:

It seems that a variation in the worm has been made, but Twitter seems to have it under control this time.

We’re aware of the variation this morning and it should be under control shortly. Thanks for all your messages!

No Google-Twitter Deal – Biz Stone

twitter

Twitter co-founder, Biz Stone, denied rumours that Google is attempting to purchase Twitter.

The Google-Twitter deal rumours have become a topic of heated debate and discussion over the last couple days. And it seems that depending on who you talk to, Google is both in late stage and early stage talks with Twitter about a possible acquisition. Suspiciously the sources remain anonymous – which immediately makes the situation doubtful.

To add some clarity before a rumour like this breaks out of control, Biz Stone spoke out and denied that there are any plans in place for Google to purchase Twitter, stating repeatedly on the Twitter Blog that Twitter’s aims are to remain independent.

“Our goal is to build a profitable, independent company and we’re just getting started”

He also wrote on the same short blog post that Twitter regularly enters discussions with various companies, as does any business seeking to make revenue.

“It should come as no surprise that Twitter engages in discussions with other companies regularly and on a variety of subjects.”

So it appears as if the much speculated deal was simply a discussion between Google and Twitter about future revenue options. Something that is indeed not surprising as Google is arguably the king of monetizing its own services, and many people seem to think that there’s definitely money to be made with the deal.

“We’ve been arguing for some time that Twitter’s real value is in search,”

says Michael Arrington, who wrote about the rumour on Techcrunch which ultimately fueled the rumour to massive proportions.

“It holds the keys to the best real time database and search engine on the internet, and Google doesn’t even have a horse in the game.”

The cheif Executive of Google, Eric Schmidt, seemed to indicate the an acquisition wasn’t on the cards, at least not at the moment

“I’m not sure prices are at their low yet, the situation globally is pretty dire. We are certainly looking. We haven’t seen anything yet that was really exciting.”

So rather than an acquisition, Google is possibly thinking of entering a revenue sharing deal with Twitter? Nothing is sure currently.

Check back for updates, this is a developing story.

British Pupils to Study Blogs, Twitter and Wikipedia instead of History

britich-flag-w400-h400

Now that’s a statement nobody would believe.

In a recent discovery of a new education proposal, children in Britain will no longer be forced to study the World War II and the Victorian ages, instead those parts of history will be replaced with compulsory studies of Twitter, Wikipedia and Blogging after a document was uncovered by The Guardian.

This is only part of a massive curriculum overhaul that’s taking the focus of teaching back to catering for a more modern and flexible approach. This knowledge (which the pupils will be taught and learned up to the age of 11) is designed to adequately prepare children for a modernized and constantly-changing world.

If the proposal is approved, one of the requirements would be the following:

  • Children to leave primary school familiar with blogging, podcasts, Wikipedia and Twitter as sources of information and forms of communication. They must gain “fluency” in handwriting and keyboard skills, and learn how to use a spellchecker alongside how to spell.

There is both strong criticism, and strong support for the proposal, and nobody is quite sure what to expect.

Visualize Twitter in 3D

I’m a very big fan of Twitter (@NuclearStr1der), and I’m constantly amazed at the creative uses of the Twitter API, especially Twittervision.

If you’re looking for a cool way to visualize the public timeline, look no farther than Twittervision. Twittervision has been around for quite a while already, displaying millions of tweets on a map of the world in real time. This 2D version is brilliant in itself… but now Twittervision 3D has been introduced. In 3D mode, Twittervision showcases all the public tweets on a 3D (and interactive) globe.

You’re able to rotate, zoom and change the angle at which Earth is viewed. A Day/Night cycle is thrown in for good measure as well. Screenshot below:

6 Ways to Let Twitter Work for You!

twitter-logo

Over at Gissisim.com, they’ve got a great list titled 6 Ways how I let Twitter work for me.

It’s a great list that has rather innovative ways of using Twitter. Here’s a quick excerpt:

3. Ask and you shall receive

I have found asking and being up front about things to be the best policy. If I have a link that I really want people to re tweet, I ask people to please retweet this link if they like it. This makes the likelihood of people sharing the link a lot greater. Some people might think that it’s not cool to ask for help, or whatever. However I find that when I see people asking for a retweet, that I will actually go out of my way to re tweet their link for them.
Also ask for help if you need it. People on twitter are a very helpful bunch. I actually owe me passing a Microsoft certification to a twitter friend! Let twitter work for you, but you need to remember that have to work for twitter in return.
